5 Ways to Go Green and Save Green this Summer!

Last week we talked about ways to save on cooling this summer, well here are some more tips for saving on energy and water bills while going green at the same time!

  • If clothes can be washed in cold water, then wash them in cold water whenever possible! Almost 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes is from heating.
  • Use a drying rack instead of using a dryer.
  • Try to take shorter showers. This will lower your water bill AND heating bill for those of us who love steaming hot showers!
  • Install a programmable thermostat so you can vary the temperature throughout the day and for when you know you will not be home. Don’t let the air conditioning run while nobody is home!
  • Turn off lights, computers and televisions when not in use.

  1. These were some helpful summer savings tips. I also can note that if you can walk/bike some were to get where you need to go and do not drive that will help save the environment for the short and long run. To save money for myself I have always unplugged everything that I do not use daily and just plug them back up when I need them. You would be surprised to how much energy you are really saving and you can compare it on your billing statements.

  2. If it is a windy day, open up the windows and let the cool summer breeze in instead of running the air condition. Turn down the thermostat during times of vacation or work, or set it on a time if possible. Also, drink water from the faucet instead of buying bottled water. Bottle water and the water coming out of the faucet are pretty much the same thing, except one is a lot cheaper!

  3. Buying local food is also a great way to go green! It also costs less because local food does not cost as much to ship and you will also be supporting your local community. There are so many wonderful summer vegetables to buy at your local farmer’s market.

  4. Turn the faucet off when you are brushing your teeth. Only turn it on to rinse. This will save water. Also, see if your electricity company will budget your monthly bill. That way the amount of energy used each month with always stay about the same. Another tip is to turn off your air when you are gone long several days.

  5. Always make sure to turn everything off and unplug things before you leave the house. Leaving the television on while not watching it or keeping a fan on while not in the room are all things that can cause your energy bill to be out of control.

  6. Skip the Bottled Water – Instead use a water filter to purify tap water. Not only is bottled water expensive, but it generates large amounts of container waste.

  7. There is a large amount of power taken from the “ghosts” of electronics. TV’s, computers, cable boxes, even car chargers all draw power even when not in use. Many things have small lights or displays that never turn off. This can be a major drain on your electric bill. Since it would be such a hassle to unplug the TV after every viewing, you can now get your outlets wired to a switch that mounts on the wall. Some have timers on them, some are just a normal switch and some all connect to a single switch in the house. You can flip this when you leave and all these power drains disappear. Remember to keep your eye out for a way to save money in the house. Sometimes you can help your wallet and the environment at the same time.

  8. In addition to adjusting your thermostat, get blackout curtains and close them during the day while you are gone. Your A/C won’t have to work so hard!
